DJ Clark Kent.

Today’s an exciting day for us at NHTVSN, as we get to finally debut part 1 of our two part exclusive interview with DJ Clark Kent. When we started the NHTVSN video project, we wanted it to be a forum for our industry friends to wax poetic on anything they chose to talk about. Upon meeting with Clark, I realized that there was quite a lot going on that he was ready and willing to talk about, so much that we ended up with more footage than we knew what to do with. We broke the interview up in as logical a way as possible… this first segment covers some of the things you know him for - DJ, producer, sneaker aficionado, tastemaker, and more. It’s not every day that you get to interview a founding father of hip hop, and for that we’re very grateful.

Before we get started, a few thanks are certainly in order. First of all, to the Commissioner for making the introduction - without you, we wouldn’t have had this opportunity. Big ups to Todd Nisbet, Mr. Bee and the rest of the Frank’s Chop Shop team for opening up their venue to us and providing a perfect backdrop for our conversation. And finally, to DJ Clark Kent for sharing some very special memories with us.

Ah the mysteries of the Universe.

Hypetrak.

Our good friends over at Hypebeast recently launched a music news feed site called Hypetrak. Instead of fashion and sneakers, this site is completely dedicated to finding and sharing new music with its readers. With Chace Infinite of Self Scientific as one of the resident bloggers, you know that the site will be a great source of info and tunes. Enjoy!

Hyperdunk Hotline.

So by now you’ve probably seen this commercial for the new Nike Hyperdunk that was produced by Wieden + Kennedy. But did you know that they’ve set up a real, working hotline that connects you to the Hyperdunk Recovery Center? Call 1877-DUNKD-ON and stay on the line. Hats off to Nike and W+K for an incredibly innovative marketing scheme.

(Thanks JRod for the heads up)

A side note: our good friend Ohmega Watts (Ubiquity) composed the background music for the video - it’s called “Platypus Strut” and is off his newest album Watts Happening. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the track.

Creative Writing.

Thanks to observant movie viewers and clever editing, writers can get called out for really crappy scripts. You’ve probably seen this:

And maybe even this:

Are there any more that you’ve seen? Post a link in the comments and I’ll add them here.

New Girl Talk Album.

DJ Greg Gillis aka Girl Talk has released a new album - his fourth, to be exact - and he’s elected to do the Radiohead pay what you like deal. For donations of $10+ you can get a physical copy of the album when it’s available so don’t be a cheapskate. He made a huge name for himself after his last album “Night Ripper” so if you were a big fan of that (as I was) you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what he’s put together this time around - what I like more about this album is that he gives the samples a little bit more room to breathe on each track. Buy it here. And then marvel at the sheer volume of songs he’s sampled for each track, which have been partially laid out for your perusal at the album’s Wikipedia page.

The Daisy Age.

Posted on June 17, 2008 by giant steps

Tony Schwartz, most famous for the “Daisy Ad” he created alongside the Doyle Dean Bernbach ad agency in 1964 to support the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential campaign, passed away this past Sunday at the age of 84. His “Daisy Ad” - revolutionary for its time - ushered in an era of mudslinging ads that still prevail to this day. Its unstated implication was that Johnson’s opponent, Senator Barry Goldwater, might use nuclear weapons if elected during the height of the Cold War. The ad was so controversial that it was yanked after only airing once, but the damage was already done as it spread “virally” via news broadcasts.

Schwartz compiled an impressive resume of work throughout his lifetime, ranging from presidential campaign radio spots to social issues that he felt strongly about (estimates place his work count at 20,000+). He’s credited with revolutionizing the process of affecting culture through electronic media. Read more about his life here.

Bodies.

“Did you venture to the South Street Seaport to see the Bodies Exhibit any time over the past three-plus years? If so, you’re entitled to a refund because Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and exhibitor Premier agreed to a settlement after a disturbing 20/20 report suggested the bodies used were from executed Chinese prisoners who may have been tortured.”

I went to see this exhibit last year and I kid you not, I was certain they were Asian bodies.
